Hogmanay and New Year Stories from the British Newspaper Archive

To celebrate the arrival of 2012, we’ve posted some Hogmanay and Ne’erday stories from the newspaper archive on our Facebook page.

Starting with a famous emancipation proclamation by Abraham Lincoln, this story gallery also contains reports on Ne’erday football matches, pension-celebrating ‘pensioners’, the Commonwealth Inauguration Ceremony of Australia, an act that finally allowed seats to be placed in UK shops(?!), the grand opening of the Manchester Ship Canal and Thomas Edison’s demo of electric lights. We’ve also looked at famous birthdays for the first and last days of the year, so have included stories on Paul Revere, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Pierre de Coubertin.

Completing the gallery are stories on traditional Ne’erday celebrations and activities, including a brief report on when the chimes of ‘Big Ben’ first sounded over the world’s airwaves. So this gallery of stories is an eclectic pick and mix – we hope it will contain something of interest for everyone.
