The suffragette, writer and early feminist, Millicent Fawcett, was born on 11 June 1847. She had an amazing life and, following her husband’s death in 1884, increased her involvement in political campaigning.
As shown by the 1875 story below from the ‘Sheffield Daily Telegraph’, her writing influenced 1,000s of people, and the word ‘Millicent’ was often used to demonstrate people’s knowledge in the area of political economy.
The 1893 story from the ‘Gloucester Citizen’, meanwhile, shows that this ‘Queen of the Bluestockings’ was also not afraid to muck in and get her hands dirty. The archive contains scores of stories about her life, which offer a fascinating insight into her life and work.
