Edvard Munch – Born on 12 December 1863

Posted on December 11th, 2013 by The British Newspaper Archive

Edvard Munch, the painter of the classic Expressionist painting, ‘The Scream’, was born in Adalsbruk, Norway, on 12 December 1863.

To mark the 150th anniversary of Munch’s birth, included below are two newspaper stories that report on how his paintings were received in the UK in the early 1930s, two book reviews about Munch from 1950, and also a brief mention of his work that appeared in a newspaper in 1897.

Oh, we also noticed that a Norwegian steamer was named after Edvard Munch – perhaps he is the only artist to have a ship named after him (well, that’s presuming unless he was named after the ship, of course, and not vice-versa). We do feel that this is a terrific naming convention that really should be much more widely used.

Thanks for posting these newspaper clippings that let us know how Munch was received during his own time. I’ve always found it fascinating that Munch was received pretty well by his critics while Van Gogh was in comparison so badly reviewed, even though he employed a similar post-impressionist style.
