The Discovery of Neptune – 23 September 1846

At the Berlin Observatory on 23 September 1846, Johann Galle and Heinrich d’Arrest discovered the planet, Neptune – after receiving an urgent letter from Frenchman, Urbain Le Verrier, telling them where to look. After the discovery was made public, there was some wrangling between France and the UK regarding who should be credited with the discovery of the new planet.
