Military and Family History Day – the David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre, Saturday 23 June

The Lanarkshire Family History Society (LFHS) is holding a Military and Family History Day on Saturday 23 June. This event will be held at the David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre, and runs from 10.30 to 16.00. Admission is free if you just wish to attend the fair. If you wish to go to the talks that are also being held, then the admission to the talks is £3. It should be a grand day out for genealogists of all ages!

‘Fathers Beware’ – A Father’s Day Story from 1931

New issues available – The Evening Telegraph 1904

Dundonians! Roll up, roll, up, read all about it! New issues of “the Tully” now available! In addition to the existing year range available on The BNA, we now have issues of The Evening Telegraph (Dundee) from 1904. The Evening Telegraph is a daily evening newspaper launched on 13 March 1877 in two editions, costing a halfpenny. When you are viewing a newspaper page . . . 1. Select the article of interest 2. Select ‘Edit Article Text’ form the left hand side options 3. Click ‘Show Article Text’ (green/blue button below the article text in the left column) 4. A popup (blue) will then show with the heading, ‘Article text, suitable for copy and paste’ 5. Millicent Fawcett – ‘Queen of the Bluestockings’

The suffragette, writer and early feminist, Millicent Fawcett, was born on 11 June 1847. She had an amazing life and, following her husband’s death in 1884, increased her involvement in political campaigning. As shown by the 1875 story below from the ‘Sheffield Daily Telegraph’, her writing influenced 1,000s of people, and the word ‘Millicent’ was often used to demonstrate people’s knowledge in the area of political economy.
