‘Nessie’ Resurfaces in 1933 and 1934 – After Hundreds of Years of Hibernation from Mainstream Scottish Society

In 1933 and 1934, the Loch Ness ‘monster’ chose to resurface – following a hiatus of hundreds of years – to take its rightful place once again in mainstream Scottish society.

We’re not sure about that ‘monster’ description, though. We mean, it’s just a matter of identification and classification, we feel (is just a case of ‘category confusion’, as the philosophers call it). Hmm, we would prefer ‘creature’.

Also, we’re not sure about that description of ‘footprint’ – should that not be ‘clawprint’ or something? Still, it does make us feel a wee bit like Robinson Crusoe on finding the footprint on his desert island…mingle-mangle, mingle-mangle…

So to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Nessie’s ca’ canny re-entry into society, here are some newspaper stories about him/her.

There are 100s of stories about ‘Nessie’ in the Archive – indeed, you can even find out when the name ‘Nessie’ stater to be used ny newspapers.

Just do a Phrase Search for ‘Loch Ness’ on the Advanced Search Page, and then use the filtering options to navigate to the years 1933 and 1934. Judging by the Search Results, 1934 was a vintage year for sightings of ‘Nessie’!

  • When I was a child [born 1928] neighbours who had been motoring along Loch Ness said they had to stop to allow a long creature slither across their path into the Loch. This would be circa 1936-37 I think. They lived in Blackhall, Edinburgh. This was true ! It might be of interest.

    • Hi Doreen, wow, what a great story! It’s certainly of interest. As it’s the 80th anniversary of Nessie’s resurfacing, we’re going to feature some stories about him/her in the next BNA newsletter. Best regards, Grant.

    • Hi Doreen, do you know the names of these neighbours from 1928 and whether their story was reported in the newspapers? I’m thinking this story might be contained in the BNA website. Regards, Grant.

  • Having had the privilege of sighting this wondrous creature on at least three occasions I am sure it has followed me to Geneva where I now live . Sightings have been Known on Full moon as one sits observing the lake from where lord Byron once lived,,,,,,,,,,

    • Hi John, what a great story! Was this anything in the papers about these sightings? Oh, I love the moonlight sightings! Is that on Lake Geneve? Best regards, Grant.

  • John Lancelot Havey-Race

Geneve it is; to keep the French quiet because the Lake is shared with these frogs it is officially known as Lac Leman.
The next full moon will be on may 25th which will be known as La luna Rousse heralding the the end of the Ice saints period. the Lake will be warming up . Conditions will be ideal for Monster sightings……….

There will be a gathering of the faithful as of the 25th and each evening through to the 30th when the summer will be welcomed,

Bring your own WHISKY entrance is free but a collection in support of the local CON`S will be mandatory.

  • Few moons have come and gone since the heralding of summer, mid -summer solstice has passed as a non event. In fact the hoped for sightings of “Nessie”were only from drunken revelers who reported seeing a cross between an inflatable rubber duck and a yellow submarine, one likely lad claimed to have seen something strange being transported and parachuted over the Lake by Easy-haggis.
But now the hot weather is upon us I’m sure that there will be extraordinary sightings during August.

  • Dear Sirs,I investigated the secret of Nessie. Help please to publish my article with your comments.I identified a kind(class), structure of body, sense-organs, reproduction, way of life, feed, method and time of hunt, habit, amount of individuals(males, females), sizes, age, three reservoirs of planet where she dwells. I know how to catch her. I will write as scientists-idiots(I will name a place, their names, organization, country) gave up in Nessie an explosive and hardly not perished. If you agree to help me, I will deport the article. Sincerely,Professor-criminalist,Colonel(rtd),Interpol Association member,Dr.Vladimir S.Pen-kin.
