‘National Newspaper Carrier Day’ – 4 September 2013

In the USA today, they celebrate ‘National Newspaper Carrier Day’.

The day celebrates the employment in 1833 of the first paper boy, Barney Flaherty, by Benjamin Day, the publisher of the ‘New York Sun’.

But the day also celebrates all the paper boys and girls down the years, who have been fleet-footed messengers of the latest news.

To mark the day, here is a newspaper report about a mass protest by paper boys in London in 1948. And as there were/are also plenty of newspaper girls, here’s a lovely story from 1912 about a wedding between a millionaire and a newspaper girl.

Thanks to Scott Phillips for letting us know about ‘National Newspaper Carrier Day’.

  • Great story.

  • Millionaire Marries Newspaper Girl 1912

Please can someone find photographs of the marrying couple! I would love to know if there was a great age difference and how their married life went.

  • In ‘Massachusetts, Marriages, 1841-1915’ we find a Frank M. Bates, born 1870 in Attleborough, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph M. Bates and Sarah L. Gardiner, married Nancy M. Corrigan, the daughter of Owen & Mary [nee Kenny] Corrigan.
Frank Bates was reportedly divorced, and the marriage took place on the 04th June 1912 in Danielson Borough, Killingly Township, Windham County, Connecticut, USA.
We might reasonable guess that he had a good 20 years seniority on his spouse, whose age was unrecorded.
