Hot off the press – papers added this week

This past week we added significantly to our most recently added titles.  We added 112,987 pages to nine existing titles, and published three years (1890-1892) of the short-lived Scottish newspaper, the Brechin Herald and Angus and Mearns News. This paper covers both the historic eastern counties of Angus and Kincardineshire.

Local titles, such as the Brechin Herald and Angus and Mearns News, could often have very short runs. In a nineteenth century version of the .com boom the latter half of the century saw an explosion in the number of newspaper titles being printed.  Printers and other businessmen saw newspapers as a way to make money, and to promote their personal political ideals. These short-run regional titles are an invaluable source for local, social and family history.  As the editors of the paper sought to build a loyal readership they included a substantial amount of local stories which reveal a great deal about the life of the towns and regions the papers served.

  • Would you please consider adding the “Liverpool Evening Express” for period 1930 to 1933?

I’m currently researching articles on my grandfather’s (Dick Burke) boxing career and the Evening Express covered his career in great detail.

    Thanks

    • Hello Stephen, our current permissions for this title is limited to the War Years – however we are in consultation with this publisher and will keep you updated on any extension to our permissions.

  • As a major British city of considerable historical significance, have you considered Plymouth’s major newspaper, The Western Evening Herald (now the Plymouth Herald)? Also the Sunday Independent (formerly the Western Independent)?

Many thanks for the great service.
