Hot off the press – new titles this week

This week we added 68,504 pages to The Archive. We have added four brand new titles, and added to six existing titles. Joining The Archive for the first time this week are papers for Cambridgeshire and Leicestershire in England.

We have added over thirty years to the Leicester Daily Post, this papers joins seven others published in Leicester. Our earliest title for the city dates to 1813, and the latest to 1950.  News for Leicestershire can also be found in the Rutland Echo and Leicestershire Advertiser.

This week we’ve also added Votes for Women. This paper joins our growing Suffragette Newspaper Collection. We currently have fourteen papers in the collection  and will continue to add to it in this centenary year.

Cambridge Intelligencer Saturday 02 July 1796

We are delighted to bring the eighteenth century title The Cambridge Intelligencer to The Archive. The paper ran for ten years between 1793 and 1803. The paper was renowned for its liberal views which ran counter to the mainstream politics of the day. One notice for ‘cheap books’ caught our attention. A book shop, Temple of the Muses, advertising its closing sale revealed some of the popular reading of the day, including Voltaire’s Romances and Tales; Newton’s Complete Herbal and Boswell’s Antiquities of England and Wales.

The Cambridge Intelligencer is joined by another new Cambridgeshire title. The Cambridge General Advertiser dates from 1839 and 1850 and offers news of the county and beyond for the mid-nineteenth century. By the 1850s the paper was catering particularly to the universities and in at least one case published a mathematics examination paper. The Archive now holds five titles published in Cambridge.
