Hot off the press – new titles added this week

This week we have added 119,102 new pages to The Archive. We have new titles covering the cities of London, Birmingham and Newcastle, and the counties of Bedfordshire and Wiltshire. We have also updated thirteen of our existing titles.

Thanks to our ongoing partnership with Trinity Mirror (now Reach plc) we have been able to add more modern pages to The Archive, with new titles going all the way up to 1986.

Two of our new titles this week are the Birmingham Weekly Post and the Uxbridge & W. Drayton Gazette. The Birmingham Weekly Post and the latter editions of the Uxbridge & W. Drayton Gazette are full of pictures of local and national news. You can read all about Princess Margaret’s visit to Solihull in 1954 when 100,000 people came to greet her here, as well as an interesting report in the Uxbridge & W. Drayton Gazette about the 1957 craze in pets – bush babies.

The Sunday Sun (Newcastle) is another of our papers digitised thanks to our partnership with Trinity Mirror. With its current run beginning in 1936, the paper offers its own perspective on the biggest event of that particular year – the abdication of King Edward VIII.

Sunday Sun (Newcastle) | 13 December 1936

“Once upon a time a real Prince Charming came amongst us when we we were sad and depressed, and he made us happier for his coming.”

The abdicating King was popular in the North East of England thanks to his visits to the local mining communities. During his 1929 visit to Bishop Auckland he was heard to state ‘I want to do something,’ whilst advising local female needle workers that they should have better light in order to do their work.

Due to his care and compassion for the working classes, and the obvious interest he showed in their daily lives and the struggles they faced, Edward VIII was clearly revered, and it was with much regret that the Sunday Sun (Newcastle) reports on his abdication.

  • I have been a subscriber for several years and greatly enjoy my use of the facilities you offer. But when oh when will you get round to some C20 coverage in the York newspapers you already offer, and when can we have the York Courant?

  • Any chance of some London newspapers from the 1920s and 30s? An extension of the Sportsman and Sporting Life into these decades would be nice 🙂

  • Any chance of more from Northern Ireland papers
