Hot off the Press – New Titles This Week

This week we have added 93,790 pages to the Archive. We have added one brand new title to our Irish collection – the Evening Herald (Dublin) – as well as the Berks & Oxon Advertiser to our collection of English titles. In addition to this, we have updated titles covering Liverpool, London and Oxfordshire.

We have added the years 1970-1977 to the Liverpool Echo. During the 1960s Liverpool had become famous for being the home of the band that had taken the world by storm, The Beatles. However by 1970, the city’s relationship with the band had somewhat soured, as had, of course, the band’s relationships with each other.

In response to the band’s 1970 film Let It Be, the Liverpool Echo interviewed four women who had been ‘swept along’ by the Beatlemania of the preceding decade. However, their enthusiasm had very much waned, with one bemoaning how she didn’t ‘like the way they look,’ and another observing how ‘they are out of touch’ and ‘you can’t associate yourself with them.’

Liverpool Echo | 19 May 1970

It wasn’t just the four women interviewed by the paper who had turned their backs on the band. During the 1970s the city of Liverpool discussed erecting a statue in honour of The Beatles, however, city councillors declined to provide a site for such a monument. Councillor Tony McVeigh stated that not only could the band not sing, that they ‘were a flash in the pan, here to-day and gone to-morrow.’

History would of course prove Tony McVeigh wrong, and within the pages of the Liverpool Echo you can find some fonder reminiscences of the band, including an account of George Harrison’s stint as a electrician at Blackler’s Stores in Liverpool city centre. Although only working at the store for about six months, he left his initials behind on the staff canteen ceiling. You can read about the story here.
