On 4 August 1792, one of the leading unacknowledged legislators of the world was born, near Horsham in West Sussex.
To celebrate the day, here is a very critical newspaper review (published in 1821) of Shelley’s visionary poem, ‘Queen Mab’.
This fiery review reveals much about the reaction to Shelley’s political poetry, and highlights exactly why Shelley went into exile.
