One of the features of The British Newspaper Archive is the OCR editing tool.  This allows every user to contribute to the improvement of The Archive.  OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition– the process we use to transform millions of digitised images into searchable text.   The computer takes an image of the page and then turns each line into text.  However, as many of us have encountered, the text is not always correct and needs improvement.  As a group, we

We hit another exciting milestone! A newspaper from every county in England.

We have reached a major new milestone in our project to digitise up to 40 million newspaper pages from the British Library’s vast collection of historic British & Irish newspapers.  Following the addition of a newspaper from the country’s smallest county, Rutland, the Archive now covers every corner of England as, for the first time, at least one title from each of the country’s 48 counties is now available to search and explore.  We have added 3,968 pages from the Rutland

New feature: In Pictures

Using our brand new feature called In Pictures you can now search for pictures in newspapers on The British Newspaper Archive. We have specially selected five newspapers from the new illustrated titles introduced last month to introduce this feature with; The Sketch, The Sphere, The Graphic, Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News, and Britannia and Eve. You can currently access the In Pictures search by visiting the title page of each of these newspapers and clicking on the new In Pictures

It’s our birthday!
