It’s been a lovely week at The Archive. We announced the arrival of The Suffragette to The Archive, added another three brand new titles and revisited several dozen titles, bringing them all one year forward.
This week our brand new titles are for the counties of Cheshire and Worcestershire in England, and Monmouthshire (Gwent) in Wales.
By 1859 The Congleton & Macclesfield Mercury, and Cheshire General Advertiser was describing itself as ‘illustrated’. The paper, like many of the period, was a mix of local news and articles of general interest. On the 5 February 1859 the paper included articles about the Eland (a type of antelope), Vancouver in Canada, Wellington College in Berkshire, and a religious festival in Japan.
We are starting our collection of the Chepstow Mercury, Volunteers’ Gazette, Monmouthshire & South Wales Advertiser with the year 1874, when complete we will have issues from 1863 to 1874. A weekly paper, and well established by 1874, the paper had regular advertisers. Every front page in 1874 carries an advertisement for ‘Reckitt’s Paris Blue’. Used it laundry, and responsible for the ‘Monday blues’, Reckitt’s and products like it were a bleaching agent for whitening clothes.
TheEvesham Journal, or Evesham Journal & Four Shires Advertiser as it was later known also joined The Archive this week, once completed we will have a thirty-eight year run for this Worcestershire newspaper. The four shires it covered were Worcestershire, Gloucestershire Warwickshire and Oxfordshire.
You can learn more about each of the titles we have added to this week by clicking on their names. On each paper’s title page you can read a FREE sample issue, learn more about our current holdings, and our plans for digitisation.

This week we are bringing you an additional year to your favourite newspapers. Where possible we publish additional years of newspapers, for which we have permission to do so, on an annual basis. There are updates for Irish, English, Welsh and Scottish papers.
