Hot off the press – new titles this week

This week we have published 21,349 pages to The Archive.  We have published six brand new titles and added pages to four existing titles.   This week we have added brand new papers for the counties of Dorset, West Sussex and Cheshire in England, and an important political newspaper for Ireland.

With the addition of the Bournemouth Guardian, The Christchurch Times and the Southern Times and Dorset County Herald The Archive now holds nine newspapers for Dorset.  Our coverage for the county now extends from the mid-eighteenth century to the 1920s.

The Horsham, Petworth, Midhurst and Steyning Express joins The Archive for West Sussex, and The Crewe Guardian for Cheshire.

For Men and Women Equally

The Rights of Citizenship;

From Men and Women Equally

The Duties of Citizenship.

The Irish Citizen forms part of our collection of Suffragette Newspapers.  The paper was first published on Saturday 25 May 1912.  It transitioned from a weekly to a monthly title in February 1916 before ceasing publication in August 1920.  We currently hold the title from 1912 to December 1919 and are in the process of sourcing the issues for 1920 from British Library holdings.

While giving ample space to the topic of suffrage the paper also offered commentary on a wide range of social and political issues.

As we explored our new titles we were once again reminded of the need to think, and search, for terms that would have been used at the time.  We were curious about the Dublin Lock Out – a strike of tram drivers which soon spread to other industries, sparked riots and reprisals, and was eventually defeated when industries ‘locked-out’ workers leaving them destitute.  Searching for Lock Out retrieved fewer results than we expected.  We got our thinking caps on and tried a few different phrases ‘locked out’ gave us more reports, as did Larkin.  Finally we focused our search by using Advanced Search to search only within the dates of the events, adding on a couple of months to allow for delayed reportage and reflective editorials.
