This week, we’re excited to introduce the Garstang Courier to our growing collection of digitised historic newspapers. Covering the rich heritage of Garstang, a historic market town in Lancashire, this weekly publication offers a fascinating window into local life during the 1990s, with the latest editions from 1994 and 1998. The Garstang Courier is more than just news – it captures the community spirit, from local advertisements to life events and the region’s deep-rooted traditions. One charming highlight from 1994 is the extension of the town’s oyster festival, which, over five years, truly became a “pearl of wisdom.”
A tip for exploring newspapers: don’t just search for the usual birth, marriage, and death records. Newspapers like the Garstang Courier also feature personal ads, such as Cecil’s heartfelt note of thanks in January 1994 to friends and family for their well-wishes during her hospital stay. These lesser-known gems offer a rich glimpse into everyday life and community connections.
We’re thrilled to announce the addition of 4,838 pages from the Horsham Advertiser to our growing collection of digitised historic newspapers, bringing the vibrant life of West Sussex in the late 1990s into focus. This weekly newspaper offers a fascinating look at local businesses, agriculture, and the active community spirit. In January 1997, Chates Farm Shop in Cowfold celebrated its new ownership with a quirky display of a 3-foot, 4-lb carrot! The Advertiser also covered local crime reports, community appeals, and society events such as the Natural History Society and the Amateur Radio Club. The paper featured travel suggestions, competitions, and cultural highlights like the 1998 Warhol exhibition in Warnham. Even political movements found a voice, with the Horsham Peace Alliance standing against Britain and America’s involvement in Iraq. This collection offers a snapshot of local history, full of unique moments that shaped the Horsham community.
