Elias Howe, the man who invented the sewing machine, died in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on 3 October 1867.
Although there are dozens of interesting stories about Elias Howe in the Archive, we really liked this article from ‘The Morning Post’ of 17 October 1867.
In addition to providing an insight into his early life, the obituary also offers the reader a sense of the struggle that Howe had to perfect his invention and bring it to market.
