Charles Darwin – born in Shrewsbury on 12 February 1809

Letter to a newspaper (in 1882) from Darwin’s friend, Admiral John Lort Stokes, describing Darwin’s workaholic routine (and sea sickness!) while aboard HMS Beagle

Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on 12 February 1809.

There are 100s of stories about Darwin in the Archive, but we really like this letter written by his friend, Admiral John Lort Stokes, who sailed with Darwin on HMS Beagle.

Through highlighting Darwin’s workaholic routine (and sea sickness!), Lort offers a fascinating insight into Darwin’s character.
