Hot off the press – new titles added this week

This week we added 147,031 pages to The Archive.  We added two brand new titles this week, one for Hampshire and one for Durham.  We also added to ten existing titles.

Both of the new titles joining The Archive this week are still published today.  The Darlington & Stockton Times, Ripon & Richmond Chronicle is celebrating 170 years this month; once digitistation is complete, we will have a run from the first edition on 2 October 1847 to 1911.   The Hants and Berks Gazette and Middlesex and Surrey Journal launched in 1878, and we plan to have editions from 1878 to 1910.

The first edition of The Darlington & Stockton Times, Ripon & Richmond Chronicle set out the aims of the paper: the proprietor was adamant that the paper would be a vehicle for good and that they would not compromise their integrity for financial gain.

A word as to the mode in which our task is to be performed. It need not be said that no personal abuse, nothing to inflame evil passions and excite class or personal hatred, shall disgrace our pages. To seek for the good and the true, to aid others in its search, in order that it may be engrafted upon mankind, ought to be our aim, and we will endeavor to make it so. With a high faith in the capabilities and progress of man, with a belief that a good feeling towards our common race is awaking into activity in the bosoms of all, from the occupants of palaces to those of cottages; with an honest purpose in our minds, we launch our paper. On these terms alone do we seek the public favor, and on none less honorable do we wish to have it. In a commercial point of view, it is certainly most desirable that our project should succeed and that personal pecuniary loss should not fall to our lot as well as labor; but it is far more desirable that our paper should not pander to evil, nor offer wrongs to humanity, either in morals or otherwise. If it succeed—well. If not, there will be the consolation that no self-reproach can be occasioned to us by its pages.
