Hot off the press – new titles added this week

This week we have added 122,131 new pages to The Archive. We have published four brand new titles and added pages to eight existing titles. Our new titles this week cover the counties of Cheshire, Dorset, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and West Sussex.

Adding to our Dorset collection is the Bournemouth Graphic, an illustrated journal covering news from the southern counties of Dorset and Hampshire. With added pages covering the early twentieth century, the paper captures all the glitz and the glamour of the popular seaside resort, with regular features on upcoming plays to be shown in the town and pictures of their stars.

In 1935 Bournemouth was shaken by its most sensational murder. Retired architect Francis Rattenbury was found dead at his home on Manor Road, Bournemouth. Accused of his murder was his much younger wife, Alma Rattenbury, and her young lover, 18-year-old gardener George Stoner. In a tragic turn of events, Alma was acquitted of her husband’s murder, but reviled by society, she took her own life. George Stoner was charged of murder, but in the event only served seven years imprisonment for the crime. The Bournemouth Graphic chronicles these events: from the discovery of Francis Rattenbury’s body, to Alma Rattenbury’s eventual suicide.

  • I’m delighted you have added the Macclesfield Courier as it is important to my social history project. Please please please could you load the earliest first? It will save me several train journeys and hours of trying to read microfilm copies at Macclesfield Library.
    Thanks.
