We are excited to bring you another 305,497 newspaper pages.  We have brought you a massive update to over 120 of our existing titles plus eleven brand-new titles.  The new titles span 140 years of history with the latest title New Observer of Bristol published in 1994. This week’s incredible release brings us stories of local writers and royal weddings.  We can read about history as it happened and track the progress of women’s rights and the American civil war.

We have brought you two new titles from the 1990s.  The Holderness Advertiser is filled with stories about local residents and feel-good stories.  Including the unique story about local resident Nigel who enjoyed walking his pet ferrets.  The New Observer (Bristol)  was a Friday newspaper filled with local news and newspapers.   It was published every week with stories about local artists, holiday schemes and even a report of a gas explosion. Each edition included a local diary providing a full list of all the local events in the area like charity fundraisers or lecturers.   We found a report from 1994 about local resident and recently published author, Mavis Danks.  Danks published her memoir about working in the Women’s Timber Corp, titled Lumber Jill.

‘Mavis was among the first to be assigned to the corps which was set up to release men from the forest and sawmills to fight the war….felling trees for pit props, barricades, telegraph poles, barricades and railway sleepers.’

The Worcester Daily Times and Journal brings us news of royalty gossip alongside international events and local happenings.  In 1898, the Worcester Daily Times reported on the warm congratulations from the Queen to the Earl of Coventry on the occasion of his daughter’s wedding.  Lady Anne Blanche Coventry married Prince Victor Albert Jay Duleep Singh.  The article continued on to report that the true love match did run smoothly at first.

‘There was considerable opposition to the match, which was mainly overcome by the perseverance of the bridegroom and the kindly intervention of the Prince of Wales.’

Another new title we have added is the Brighton Argus from 1910.  The newspaper brings you all the local news and intrigue from murder charges to a bicycle their being captured.  The articles are short but no less exciting.  We also love the pages of classified advertisements available.

Further North, we have published the Halstead Gazette.  This weekly Essex newspaper gives you longer-form articles.  In the first issue of the Halstead Gazette we have available online, the paper announced that the new provisions of the Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act were to come into effect.  The new provisions advanced the rights of women and protected their property and earnings from deserted husbands or their deserted husbands’ creditors.  The passing of this act marked a milestone in women’s rights.

We have brought you two brand new Welsh newspapers, the Pembrokeshire Herald .  Local newspapers are excellent for discovering local birth, marriage and death records.  Another local title we have added is the Andover Advertiser and North West Hants Gazette of Hampshire.  Regional papers will also provide you will excellent details about local events, such as

the lecture that took place at Whitchurch town hall on homoeopathy.  ‘A lecture was delivered at the Town hall on ‘Homeopathy’ H F Fountain, Esq.  The lecturer riveted the attention of a delighted audience with his forcible address and well times illustrations.’

We have also published the Haverfordwest & Milford Haven Telegraph.  The 28 December issue from 1853 celebrated the incredible achievement of the opening of the South Wales Railway to Haverford.

The Boston Gazette, the latest Saturday newspaper from Lincolnshire, brings us both international and domestic news.  The incredible pages from 1861 show early reporting of the American Civil War.  At the time the world was yet to understand the scale of the conflict.  The Boston Gazette had the headline ‘Revolution in the United States’ and reprinted a letter from an Alabama resident.  The American described the events when the Alabama governor ordered the ceasing of the state arsenal.  There were also reports of forts in Mississippi and Florida being attacked.  You can read history as it happened.
