Hot Off The Press – New Titles This Week

This week at the archive we’ve added 212,914 new pages, with a new Kent title and plenty of updates.

Joining The Archive this week is the Tunbridge Wells Standard. Described as an organ of the Conservative Party the paper was established in 1856 the paper focused on local events and gave space to announcing the comings and goings of the gentry and other fashionable people during the tourist season.

Published on a Friday the paper, which served the spa town noted for its mineral springs, advertised a large number of cures in its pages. In keeping with the style for nineteenth century newspapers many of the advertisements were found on the front page – a space reserved for advertising rather than news.

Many of the cures offered cured a staggering array of ailments. Holloway’s pills were recommended for ‘all diseases affecting the stomach, liver, kidneys and bowels’ as well as ‘weakness, langour and debility’. While ‘Du Barry’s Delicious Revalenta Arabica Food’:

Restores perect digestion, strong nerves, sound lungs, healthy liver, refereshing sleep, functional regularity and energy to the most disordered or enfeebled.
