This week we have added 121,443 pages to The Archive. We now have over 25 MILLION pages in The Archive! This week we have added four brand new titles, and added tens of thousands of pages to fourteen existing titles.
This week we have published new titles for the counties of Sussex, West Sussex and Dorset in England. For Scotland we have published an extensive run of the Forres, Elgin and Nairn Gazette, Northern Review and Advertiser, this paper offers coverage of the county of Moray or Elginshire as it was also known, in north-east of the country.
As part of our partnership with Trinity Mirror we have also brought a new, unique, title to The Archive. Good Morning was produced during the Second World War as a newspaper for the Royal Navy’s Submarine Branch. The newspaper brought a piece of home to the men who spent weeks submerged beneath the oceans with no contact with the outside world.
Launched in April 1943, the paper was sent to ports in bundles of thirty to be placed on board the submarines. The paper was numbered, rather than dated, and distributed to the men daily. There was a special edition for Sundays. The paper featured light news, humours stories and pin-up girls and comic strips like Popeye and Jane, whose far-fetched antics would have been familiar to the men from regular newspapers.
The most valuable aspect of the paper for those with family who served with the Submarine Service are the stories published for the Able Seamen about their families back home. Reporters and photographers visited families to get news to pass on to the men, and published photos of parents, wives and children.
